Special Track on Metadata & Semantics for Digital Humanities and Digital Curation (DHC2018)

The 12th International Conference on Metadata and Semantics Research (MTSR'18)
will be held at Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, Cyprus between
October 23rd – 26th,  2018

Aim and Scope

Ontologies are the central components of semantic tools and have been present in the art and cultural area for some time. For instance, the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) supports the integration, communication and the exchange of differently structured information from the cultural heritage field. Meanwhile, there are some projects that already use these semantic technologies. For instance, a project of the British Museum (http://collection.britishmuseum.org), allows the collection of all available data as Linked Open Data (LOD). Also, the implemented EU project Europeana (http://www.europeana.eu/portal/) focuses on the global accessibility of cultural information as LOD. According to the EU Commission, a prominent role for the future of the European knowledge and information society is played by sharing the electronic content. In 2009, the German Federal Government had decided to create a German Digital Library (Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de), which should link numerous German cultural and scientific facilities and integrate them at European level in the Europeana.

The aim of this Special Track is to discuss the role of semantics and metadata in combination with the personalization and adaptation of information and knowledge. We invite the community to a discussion in which we will try to find new creative ways to handle semantic technologies in cultural heritage, especially in digital humanities and digital curation. Furthermore, DHC aims at improving the exchange of ideas between different communities involved in research concerning, among other history, educational science, digital humanities, visualization, machine learning, information retrieval, data mining, HCI, etc. The Special Track is especially intended for researchers working on multidisciplinary tasks who want to discuss problems and synergies.

Topics

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following aspects:

  • Semantic-based data mining and information retrieval
  • Semantic-based profiling, clustering and collaborative filtering
  • Use of Semantic-based technologies in cultural heritage
  • Information Discovery Systems and Recommendations
  • Integration of metadata and semantic research into digital humanities and digital curation
  • Open Repositories and Research Infrastructures

The participants are also encouraged to address the following questions:

  • What is semantics?
  • Which benefits come from semantic technologies for cultural heritage?
  • In what ways can semantics improve Digital Humanities?
  • How can we combine Digital Curation and semantic technologies?
  • How should semantics affect the way information is presented?

Important Dates

  • July 1st, 2018: New Submission deadline (Full and Short papers)
  • July 1st, 2018: New Submission deadline (Posters, Workshops, Tutorials, Demos and Panels)
  • July 27th, 2018: Notification of decision
  • August 24th, 2018: Camera-ready papers due

23rd – 26th October 2018, Conference at Cyprus University of Technology,  Limassol, Cyprus

Submission procedure

The following types of submissions are invited:

  • Full papers (12 pages, CCIS format) reporting completed research
  • Short papers (6 pages, CCIS format) presenting ongoing or preliminary research
  • Posters (4 pages)
  • Proposals for Tutorials, Workshops, Demos and Panels (1-3 pages providing a description)

Submissions should be original and not previously submitted, published and under review to other Conferences or Journals.  All submissions will be reviewed on the basis of relevance, originality, importance and clarity following a double-blind peer review process. Submissions associated by any MTSR member (e.g. Chairs and PC members of MTSR or any of its Tracks) will follow a double-blind peer review process by an independent review committee.

Submitted papers have to follow the LNCS proceedings formatting style and guidelines. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to register to the Conference and present their work in the form of either oral presentation or poster presentation. The Conference welcomes Workshops and Tutorial on any issues concerning the main themes of MTSR such as metadata, ontologies, semantic Web, knowledge management, software engineering and digital libraries. Interested authors can submit to EasyChair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mtsr2018

Conference Proceedings

Proceedings will be published by Springer in CCIS Vol. 846 (Communications in Computer and Information Science) book series (http://www.springer.com/series/7899). CCIS is abstracted/indexed in Scopus, SCImago, EI-Compendex, Mathematical Reviews, DBLP, Google Scholar. CCIS volumes are also submitted for the inclusion in ISI Proceedings.

Other Publication Opportunities

Selected papers might be considered for a revised and extended version to be published in a range of international journals, including the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies (Inderscience) (http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/ind/ijmso) and Program (Emerald) (http://www.emeraldinsight.com/loi/prog), currently published as Data Technologies and Applications.

Awards

There are two types of awards: the Best paper award and the Best student paper award, both sponsored by euroCRIS (http://www.eurocris.org/).

  • Best paper award: This award will be presented to the authors of the best full research paper submitted and presented to the conference.
  • Best student paper award: MTSR sponsors a paper competition to recognize excellence in a conference paper contribution whose primary author is a student (normally at a PhD or MRes level). The student is required to present the paper at the MTSR 2018 conference. Submissions are evaluated on their originality, scientific merits, structure, and clarity of composition.
